메탈리카(Metallica)는 덴마크에서 미국으로 이민한 드러머 라스 울리히(Lars Ulrich)를 주축으로 미국 로스앤젤레스에서 1981년 결성된 스래시 메탈, 헤비메탈 밴드이다.
스래시 메탈의 빅4 중 하나이며, 빅4를 넘어 세계적으로도 손꼽히는 인기와 팬층을 자랑하는 밴드이다.
1981년 라스 울리히가 모집한 인디밴드로 출발하여 프로그레시브 성향의 스래시 메탈로 오버그라운드에 진입하였고, 1986년 3집 Master of Puppets의 수록곡 <Master of Puppets>를 히트시키며 미국 메탈 씬의 주류로 올라섰다. 다음 앨범인 ...And Justice for All도 히트시키고, 이후 발매한 앨범인 Metallica(음반)에서 메탈리카는 인기의 정점을 찍었다.
히트한 싱글로는 <Seek and Destroy>(1983), <Creeping Death>(1984), <Fade to Black>(1984), <Master of Puppets>(1986), <One>(1988), <Enter Sandman>(1991) 등이 있다. 특히 <Master of Puppets>는 메탈 씬의 클래식 중 하나로 자리잡아 드림 시어터, 림프 비즈킷 등 많은 후배 뮤지션들이 커버하였다.
현재까지 정규 앨범 11장을 발매하였고, 그래미 어워드를 8번 수상했다. 2003년에는 'MTV Icon'에 선정되었고, 2009년에는 로큰롤 명예의 전당에 헌액되었으며, 커리어 통산 1억 2,600만 장 이상의 음반 판매고를 기록하고 있다.
